After visiting the Sangeetha Mahal, we went to a restaurant and had our lunch. The food offered was delicious and included the some of the local dishes. Another place that we visited in Thanjavur was the Rajarajan Manimandapam Thanjavur. It was built in 1991, during the 8th World Tamil Conference in Thanjavur. The place is open to the public from 10 am to 8 pm on all days of the week. As we reached the place, I saw that there were a number of tourists waiting to get inside, and we too joined a group to get in. It is a beautiful structure and is built in the style of the buildings constructed during the Chola period.
The small and well maintained garden inside is an ideal for children with swings, slides and other such things. Some children were already enjoying on the swings and slides, with their parents standing by. It had a museum in the ground floor, which was built in 1984 to commemorate the 1000th birth anniversary of Raja Raja Chola, who as the most famous king in Thanjavur. Thanjavur was the centre of art, religion and architecture during those times. The Brihadeswara Temple built by Rajaraja Chola is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Thanjavur is also known for its unique style of paintings called “Tanjore Paintings” which are unique and very beautiful. There are lots of students who come here to learn this art.
The museum at Thanjavur Manimandapam has a collection of sculptures, bronze statues, paintings, coins and other artifacts to attract the visitors. The statue of Raja Raja Chola is a thing of great beauty. I saw a lot of tourists examining different pieces of art and marveling at their beauty. Some even took photographs standing near the statue of Raja Raja Chola. There was a guide who explained to us about various items in the museum.
Rajarajan Manimandapam at Thanjavur is one of the important tourist attractions in Thanjavur and if you ever visit the place, makes it a point to spend some time at Rajarajan Manimandapam. I am sure you will love the place.
